The water level in Meghna River has increased more than normal due to the effect of the full moon. As a result, coastal areas of Meghna including Ramgati, Kamalnagar, and Raipur of Lakshmipur were submerged.

By Thursday afternoon, tidal water began to enter the coast. It inundated vast areas adjacent to Meghna River in Ramgati, Raipur and Kamalnagar upazilas of the district. Roads, homesteads, crop fields, low-lying houses along with fish tanks were submerged in tidal water. But after 8 pm the water started coming down.

In addition to Thursday, last Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday (July 21 and 24) similarly flooded coastal areas.

They complained that the under-construction embankment of the Meghna river was not constructed on time, so they were drowning in tidal water every year. If the embankment was built quickly, the coastal residents would have been saved from the tidal water.

Elderly Jalal Ahmed, a resident of Chharmartin area of Kamalnagar, said that their house was submerged in tidal water. Water has entered the house of those whose house is low. The roads in the area are submerged.

He also said that many people in the area have made Aman seeds in the fields. They were destroyed by tidal water. Farmers are suffering huge losses.

Abduz Jaher said that the movement of the roads under water is difficult. In addition, five fish enclosures of his farming were drowned and washed away.

Abu Taher, a resident of the coast, said that the tide rises twice a day, day and night. Poultry and cattle are troubled by the tide at night. Many chickens inside the cage drowned.

Jahanara, a housewife from Charmartin Calvert area, said, I sit on the bed during the tide. Cooking cannot be done due to water entering the kitchen. I am in trouble with family members including children.

Local residents Abu Kalam and Karim said that the rural roads have been severely damaged by the tide. Tidal water enters the locality around August-September every year. But due to climate change this year untimely (early) high tides have flooded the coast.

A person named Yusuf said that the work of protecting the river bank is going on. But the work is not over yet. As a result, when the tidal water rises, the coast sinks. This is causing damage to their crops and homesteads. Therefore, he demanded to finish the construction of sustainable embankment quickly.
